: House tax defaulters may soon find employees of the

) standing outside and announcing their names along with tax status on loudspeaker for the entire mohalla to hear. The decision has been taken by LMC to boost realisation of house tax which has been lowest in past three financial years.
According to LMC records, there are 5.49 lakh houses within municipal jurisdiction which are liable to pay tax, but only 2.32 lakh (43%) have paid the tax so far this year. Against a total estimated revenue of Rs 600 crore in house tax, this year only Rs 172 crore have been collected till now. The tax collection was low in last two years as well but higher in comparison to this year. LMC had collected Rs 178 crore in 2017-18 and Rs 192 crore in 2016-17.
A survey conducted by LMC found that Old City areas like Chowk, Bhawaniganj, Husainabad, Aminabad, Yahiyaganj, Rajajipuram, Yahiyaganj, Aishbagh etc. are among the lowest tax paying areas, with only 22% owners paying tax regularly.
In contrast, 85% of house owners in Gomtinagar, Indranagar and Vikasnagar pay their tax regularly.
“After the survey, LMC has selected around 11,000 tax defaulters who will be sent notices for paying their house tax within the deadline. If they fail to do so, LMC will send their zonal employees with loudspeakers announcing the name of defaulters and how much tax he/she has to pay,” said LMC in-charge of tax collection, Ashok Singh.
