Don't approve building plans along first elevated corridor: PWD to Bengaluru civic bodyBENGALURU

: Construction activity along the proposed elevated corridors that’ll crisscross the city will take a hit as the public works department (

PWD

) directed the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (

BBMP

) to temporarily suspend granting approvals for building plans.

Incidentally, an order to this effect was issued on February 2 by additional chief secretary (PWD) Rajneesh Goel to BBMP commissioner N Manjunatha Prasad, even before the alignment for the controversial corridors has been finalised.

The PWD is implementing the corridors through the Karnataka Road Development Corporation Limited (KRDCL).

The KRDCL is in the process of taking up work on executing phase 1 of the project — the north-south corridor connecting Baptist Hospital, Hebbal, to Silk Board junction, spanning a distance of 23km.

However, sources in the know told TOI that the north-south corridor will pass through Mehkri Circle, Jayamahal, Cantonment Railway Station, Balekundri Circle, Chinnaswamy Stadium, Residency Road, Richmond Circle, Shantinagar Double Road, Shantinagar Service Road and Hosur Road.

An officer involved in the project said land acquisition would be minimal and the directive to suspend approval for building plans is only a precautionary measure.

Refusing to divulge project details, KRDCL managing director BS Shivakumar said it is still in preliminary stages and information will be shared with citizens once things are ready for the execution.

The order from Goel said that a meeting with chief minister HD Kumaraswamy in the chair had given in-principle nod for the project alignment and said the matter should be placed before the cabinet for approval.

Goel stated that the project implementation plan is in the final stages.
